W M RALSTON-BURGER

After graduating from San Francisco State University as an art major in 1985, I painted, drew and exhibited for the following ten years. Life events happened, as they will. Although I had brief periods of sharing studio space and participating in life drawing groups, it wasn’t until retirement and moving to the beautiful Oregon coast, that I was able to again seriously pursue painting.

My primary interest is on the human figure, but I am so drawn to our beautiful surroundings, that most of my latest paintings are landscapes. It has been a wonderful adventure to meet and paint “en plein air” with a local group of artists on Tuesday mornings around the area.

My studio paintings tend to be larger, and apt to include figures. I use photos as reference, but also paint from life. I am one of a cadre of local artists who hire models to pose for drawing or painting at the art department on the SWOCC campus.

Although I use a variety of materials, I paint primarily with oils and consider my work “contemporary realism”, for lack of a better term. For me, this means use of simple compositions, high value colors, sharp contrast and flattened space.

Recently, I have experimented with collage and mixed media on canvas and paper. It is an ongoing journey.
